From that first-born’s sketch of an airplane…something we have never drawn from him, to that doll-baby’s beautiful abstract art all sparkling with hints of pink… Me putting scissor blades to paper fashioning an infinitely-less glorious version of snow-spun flakes. Our hands always making things . Brings my mind back to our first week of Wisdom & Learning Time of the New Year, remembering God as Creator.

Oh, how we are made in His image…using hands to spin together beauty. We make art out of days as we plan before Him how they should be put together. We create as we piece together decor for a centerpiece or items for a new nook in our homes. We are the beauty seekers, even the ones who make it.

In Greek homoíōsis we are made in His likeness. Is it any wonder then that we want to create? We want to make beauty out of our lives…see His glory in our day. We long to be a part of Him, to be intertwined in His wonder. That’s why we gape at a fine painting or the meticulous sketch of a face. That’s why we make things all day long everyday. Something in us can’t help reflecting Him. We’re in search for that which makes life beautiful.

We pin away on pinterest because of it; we spend money in pursuit of it… We are looking for beauty, because, I think, we are looking for HIM.

Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, GOD shines forth.

Psalm 50:2

And our eyes marry the sky at dawn and look on longingly at sunset… There is no artist superior. The whole expanse is His canvas. Seasons give way to seasons and we find the whole earth drips with wonder…beauty hanging on autumn leaves, the delicate snow of winter laces itself up in white…spring rains enter in chasing after the first buds on trees, the delightful smell of summer’s fresh cut grass…. The creation is fallen, subjected to futility, groaning even, yet it still puts God’s handiwork on display and we are refreshed by its beauty. He makes everything beautiful in its time, because that is what He is, the perfection of beauty.

Maybe more than the beauty we seek to bring into our homes… Better than outward adornment… is the Perfection of Beauty, our God.

And our eager hands often create, trying to make things beautiful…made in His image…And I think what we’re longing…what I am longing for… is Him.

One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord….

Psalm 27:4
