Toddling to marathon running…how to win every race

The Word sown into our souls, that’s what I think we really need. The Word becoming a real part of us. Not just knowledge…what good does knowledge alone do…don’t the demons know and even tremble? But the Word sown into our soul, woven deep into the fabric of our everyday life, I think that’s what we long for. To live as free as we are in Jesus, to live in the wide open spaces of obedience.

This toddling baby of mine. Oh he is into everything. Memorizing perhaps is sort of like learning to walk. Remember, when you first fell in love with Jesus…when His Word was so new, so fresh…you just toddled all through it. Reading here and there, just about everywhere longing to get it into your system…our souls get all parched for Him, and when we’re awakened to thirst like that we clamor for satisfaction. Then, toddling all over the place gives way to studying deep…and we start to soak, start to see what we’d been missing going everywhere…we sit awhile take it all in.

Then we realize we want the Word not just outside of us, not just on the page, but in our heart…we want this stuff of life to become a very real part of us.

Our desire transitions and we aren’t toddling anymore, we want to stand firm and walk deliberately in the glorious freedom we see. We aren’t taking first steps, toddling about the Word, we’re walkers who study long, and the marathon runners who sow the Word in and let it root all deep.

If you long to Memorize365 it happens in slow succession…you memorize one. verse. at a time. You toddle into the Word and before you know it your footing is firm and sure. You let truth in. We can all memorize one verse, then you take it and put it with another and another…that’s how a whole passage is rooted down deep in your heart. The reason people fail to finish memorizing a passage is because they stop memorizing just one verse. We’re stuck on the lofty goal and can’t see that the way to finish well is to take a baby step, and that baby steps move us to mature walking.

I don’t know if you memorize Scripture, or if you’ve given up, but in Jesus you can always begin again. You memorize the very same way you do just about anything…with one little step after another.

Take your one. verse. write it down. Rehearse it many times. Read it many times. And then put your Bible and pen down and speak it into the empty air…this is spiritual oxygen. Breathing words filling up empty spiritual lungs. This is how you have enough energy to run the race of life. This is how you endure. Will you stumble, flail, fall? Sure, but just like my toddling one year old get up & try again. You’re going to learn to walk in the Word, even run. You win any race the very same way…train hard and keep running.
